A geological-environmental itinerary has been created in the area of the ophiolites for educational and tourist purposes. This itinerary follows a ring-route along the slopes of the ophiolite outcrop of Mount Calvario, touching on the village of Medola, a settlement of undisputed historical and cultural importance, (mentioned as early as 1071 among the twelve courts donated by Beatrice of Lorraine to the Benedictine abbey of Frassinoro.
On the rocky spur of Poggio Medola once stood a fortress consisting of a simple tower, of which only a circular cistern dug into the rock remains).
The site covers a wider area of land of about 308 hectares, straddling the municipalities of Montefiorino and Palagano, which has been designated as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) belonging to the Natura 2000 network, consisting of no less than 12 habitats of Community interest.
In the Modena area, the valley of the Dragone torrent is the richest in ophiolite outcrops that take on greenish-black and reddish-brown colours and give rise to a varied and unique landscape. The greater resistance to erosion has led to the formation - as in the case of Mount Calvario - of singular and fascinating morpho-sculptures which emerge from the adjacent terrain.
The ophiolites are the oldest rocks present in the Modena area, consisting of fragments of an ancient ocean floor, formed in the Jurassic period (about 160 million years ago) called the Ligurian-Piedmontese Ocean.
