Torre della Strega

The Torre della Strega, or “Witch’s Tower”, stands on a hilltop at Fogliano near Maranello, a site which seems to suggest that this was once a look-out point or watchtower. It consists of the remains of a square tower with sides of just under six metres, now about 7 metres tall, built between the 13th and 15th centuries C.E., all that is left of a fortified structure used as a watchtower and refuge, which belonged to a system of fortifications that included the castles of Maranello, Spezzano and Montegibbio.

Modena Planetarium has chosen the site as excellent for observing the night sky: so two circular platforms to accommodate telescopes have been installed next to the tower.
