Cosa Nostra explained to children
Ottavia Piccolo
Sometimes, to explain things, we should just look for words. Find them. Finally say them, out loud. The simplest thing. Tell how in Palermo, on 19 April 1983, for the first time in the history of the city, a woman, Elda Pucci, was elected Mayor. Then tell how always in the month of April, a year later, on the 13th, Elda Pucci, the Doctor, committed suicide. Finally, talk about how, just one year later, on 20 April 1985, Elda Pucci’s house in Piana degli Albanesi was blown up by two charges of explosives. In the before, in the middle, in the after, there where everything mixes like lime, like glue, the billions of heroin, the assassinations of General Dalla Chiesa, of Michele Reina, of Piersanti Mattarella, of Pio La Torre, of the writer Pippo Fava, the cement of Vito Ciancimino, the Inzerillos, the Badalamentis, the Buscettas, the advent of Totò Riina. And the city of Palermo which for the first time, during Elda Pucci’s mandate, became a civil party in a mafia trial.
If we could explain Cosa Nostra like to children, everything would be different. Yet the simplest words, sometimes, are the most difficult to find, the ones that only the theater can say.
An actress, an ensemble of voices, the stage: the story of a woman, of a city, of a year. Ottavia Piccolo and the Soloists of the Multiethnic Orchestra of Arezzo return to compete on stage with the words of Stefano Massini, to give shape and structure to a necessary, civil theatre, in which the story of ethics passes through words, timbres and actions of those who often have no voice: characters like Haifa in Occident Express or Elda in Cosa Nostra explained to children.
